AN JUAN, Puerto Rico, October 13, 2019.- the Dominican Republic won the NORCECA Women’s Continental Championship against the United States in five thrilling sets 3-2 (25-19, 25-23, 15-25, 20-25, 15-9) on Sunday night at Roberto Clemente Coliseum of San Juan, Puerto Rico.
The Dominican Republic finishes the tournament with a 4-1 record, serving the United States their only loss of the tournament at 4-1; the Dominicans had lost against the U.S. in the preliminary round. This is the fourth time the Dominicans and the U.S. battle for the NORCECA title and the first time Dominicans have come out on top, winning their second gold medal in the history of the event.
Final Standings: 1. Dominican Republic, 2. United States, 3. Canada, 4. Puerto Rico, 5. Mexico, 6. Cuba, 7. Costa Rica, 8. Trinidad and Tobago.
Brayelin Martinez was named the Most Valuable Player MVP of the NORCECA Women’s Continental Championship for her remarkable contribution to the Dominican Republic’s five thrilling sets for the Gold Medal victory 3-2 (25-19, 25-23, 15-25, 20-25, 15-9) over the United States.
In other individual recognitions, from the U.S team, Kim Hill received the award for First Best Spiker, Tori Dixon as the Second Best Blocker, Karsta Lowe was awarded as Best Opposite, Jordyn Poulter the Best Setter and Justine Wong the Best Digger.
Canadás Alexa Grey received the award of Second Best Spiker, Andrea Rangel of Mexico the Best Scorer and María José Castro of Costa Rica the Best Libero.
From Puerto Rico, the First Best Blocker award was handed to Neira Ortiz and Shara Venegas the Best Receiver.
